Episode 3b – The thing at the top of the stairs

In reality it had only been a few days, but it felt like an eternity since all this started. The top floor was now completely inaccessible and nobody was allowed to go up there. Guards had been posted at the foot of the stairs in an attempt to prevent any more deaths.

Two students had died on the first night, their bodies being thrown out of the windows and landing on the hard stone below. Another had been killed later, crushed beneath a large wooden cabinet. His dying screams echoing through the halls.

The residents had no option but to listen to the noise coming from the floor above, and nobody had slept in days. Sounds of furniture being flung around, doors banging, and anything that wasn’t fastened down being slammed against the walls.

Somehow an angry spirit had been unleashed on the top floor of the academy and it refused to leave. Janoszerilyn had been to consult the Dimmer Sisters hoping to find a way to remove it, but the price they demanded could not be paid.

Mylera was certain this was the work of the Fog Hounds and an attack had already been made in retaliation. Crippling the crew of smugglers and destroying properties in Brightstone, Charterhall, and Six Towers. Janoszerilyn wasn’t convinced they were responsible. The Fog Hounds had no reason to provoke the Red Sashes, it just didn’t add up, but Mylera was reacting more and more irrationally and that spelt trouble.

The Red Sashes were once among the most powerful gangs in Crow’s Foot. If anyone realised how weak they now were they’d be wiped out. Perhaps Mylera was no longer the person to lead them. If only he could find a way to bring her face to face with whatever was lurking upstairs!
